I will be driving cross country from washington to maine and want to know what the regulations are on transporting guns in the trunk across state lines. Anyone know of an informative website that I can go to to get accurate information on this?

most often if it is cased and locked, and in the trunk, also known as the 3 step rule (would take 3 steps to get a hold of the weapon) you are legal. the bugger issue is what kind of weapon is it? some places have outlawed posetion of classes of weapons. there is Federal law about transporting weapons across state lines (peaceable journey laws), but they have been ignored by some LEO's (NJ comes to mind).
