i think the only answer is a lot of practice. obviously relaxing and thinking what you want to see drawn before you draw it helps a lot. do it in pencil first, correct mistakes for a while until you're happy, etc.
if you're not happy with your lines or pulse, and you want more perfect line, do this:
before you start your drawing, prepare 4 sheets of paper. close your eyes, and start drawing curves and circles. do it until you've more or less filled the sheet. then do angular lines, then invent exercises yourself. then go crazy and do what you want. it's a way to relax your wrist, empty tensions and grow more sensitive to touch, which is very important and helpful.
and if you're trying to draw from reality rather than imagination, there's many techniques. some quite time taking. you can always use the classic one. measuring proportions with your pen, use projections, tracing paper, etc.

Yes...to my amazement this works even for those who claim they can only draw stick people. It is drawing from the right side of the brain. Simply turn a picture upside down, and then begin to sketch it....Now see what the difference is. My Ex Husband who had never drawn anything in his life was awestruck at the fact that he was finally able to simply follow the lines, this activates both hemispheres of the brain and the pictures are wonderful!! Oh! It worked for me too...to my surprise and I was painting at the time!

Find some designs that you like and start tracing those (putting them under the paper you're drawing on) as often as you can. Then start drawiing them by just looking at them and making minor adjustments where you want to add your own flair or what not. Then stop using other people's designs and start drawing from memory and altering as much about them as you can to make your own unique style.

Try to look at objects and view them in terms of geometic shapes, eg. circles, squares, triangles,...etc.
I will look at objects in circles, sometimes not that round.
Put it on paper lightly, so that you may alter according to the actual image.
It's difficult to express in words, but in the past, I can manage to teach small children of 5-9 year's old to draw realistic drawings in a short time. The rest depends on their practice and interest in drawing.

Get a teddy bear and a piese of pastel or charcoal. Look at it and draw using the flat side most and without using any outlines.
Readmy post at http://www.kubertsworld.com/Forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1804

Don't be so attached to the outcome. Accept what you are getting and move on.
