As the brain loses oxygen, several things happen very quickly:
-Brain cells begin shutting down, resulting in confusion, poor cognition, and altered perceptions.
-Peripheral vision is lost, resulting in "tunnel vision"
-Visual clarity is lost, resulting in blurry, faded imagery
-The brain releases endomorphins, chemicals similar to morphine. Endomorphins are powerful painkillers and produce extreme euphoria.
A great deal of medical research exists about NDE's. It's interesting to note that the effects of NDE's can be generated, safely and consistently, in two different ways.
The first method is to place a person in a centrifuge, a device that generates high gravitational forces. The heart has a difficult time pumping blood to the brain under these conditions. As the subject enters unconsciousness, he often experiences bright lights, tunnels, pleasant memories, feelings of unconditional love, etc. The condition was first reported by fighter pilots, who train in centrifuges to withstand the high G-forces generated by fighter jets.
The second method of generating NDE is through stimulation of certain areas of the brain with electromagnetic waves. Doing so temporarily disrupts the electrical conductivity of the neurons of the brain and can produce all sorts of strange perceptual effects, including those normally associated with NDE. By targeting particular areas of the brain, researchers can produce fairly consistent experiences of heaven, hell, and a lot of things in between
