I've heard of great numbers of people who actually have legal copies of Windows but are being told otherwise by the "Microsoft Genuine Advantage" utility.

If your computer has a Genuine Windows sticker on it, or you have the disk package from your Windows installation disc with that sticker, call Microsoft and complain.

Or you could ditch Microsoft and their predatory policies entirely: http://www.ubuntu.com

unfortunately the only ways around this are to either buy a legal license for the install you have, or buy a legal copy and reformat your hard drive installing the new legal copy. I have seen cases where the illegal copy of windows had been somewhat disabled to the point of not running properly.

dont panic, they make it sound worse than it is,firstly you wont get any more automatic updates, but if yoy have a friend with a genuine windows, ask them to let you know when they get updates, and ask them to note down the update number, and you can download them on their p.c and burn them to disc
you then can install them manually to yours,i used to do it until i got another copy of windows
as for the reminder that pops up at boot-up,right click the genuine microsoft icon (star shape)in your taskbar and click on change notification settings, you will then go to microsoft and you can disable any notifications there, just remember to save your settings
finally just make sure your anti-virus and spyware security defenitions are kept up to date as this will be your only defence, but you still get critical updates as my mate got one the other day
you can pick up a new windows xp home for £60 from http://www.dabs.com/productlist.aspx?&NavigationKey=11168&NavigationKey=4294958989&CategorySelectedId=11168&PageMode=1
you might be better off waiting 8 months and getting windows vista, and if you have a second computer why not download the beta copy of vista from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/preview.mspx
good luck

You wont get any more security updates.
You can buy XP with service pack 2 for £60 if you also buy something cheap like a mouse, try a couple of reputable online shops like Dabs or Amazon.

There are ways around this!

BUT you will be better of in the long run with a legal copy, updates, problem will not re-occur etc etc.

Spend the money!
