They're both capable of dominating a game, Shaq has always been capable, Dirk just started to really play ball this year.

If they both retired today, Shaq would be an automatic first-ballot Hall of Famer. Dirk still has a long way to go for that level, in terms of being great for a period of years. Dirk would not make the Hall of Fame based on his up-to-the-minute career accomplishments (Sleepy Floyd had a 50 point playoff game)...

A lot of fans (and Sportcenter anchors) seem to be starting to mention Dirk in the same sentence with Larry Bird... it's hard to believe that many of the same people who say 'no one will ever be better than Jordan' also think that Dirk is as good as Bird was... people seem to have no historical perspective of the NBA (this is not specifically a comment on an earlier post, who correctly points out that Dirk has to do what he's doing for a while longer before being compared to Larry). I'm not sure Dirk is a better rebounder than Larry was... especially when you consider that Bird had a lot of rebounds taken away from him by his own teammates, Robert Parrish and Kevin McHale. One today's Mavs team, Bird would be at least the equal of Dirk, if not better, as a rebounder. Bird was also a much (much, much, MUCH) better passer and ball handler... and was an even better clutch shooter, although Dirk is getting decent in that respect. Of course, Bird was Mr. Clutch from day one in the NBA.

But another earlier post had it right as well, you just can't compare players at different positions properly, especially since Shaq is really an old-fashioned, post-up Center, while Dirk is a modern day power forward (he plays more like a small forward, but he's a 7 footer).

I hope the finals go 7 games, that would be fun!

Anyway, Shaq is vastly superior in terms of career accomplishments, but I don't think Mark Cuban would trade Dirk to get Shaq today.

apples and oranges...power forward or center...are we talking in there prime or today? in there prime there is no comparison Shaq is a beast in the middle and a legend in his own time...Dirk is a great power forward who one day I believe will be mentioned with Larry Bird comparisons are already being made but Dirk has a ways to go before that comparison is merited although hes probably a better rebounder...now today you would not trade a Dirk for a Shaq simply because Shaqs age...and the great pontential of Nowizki...

Shaq is bigger and has more NBA finals experience, but I think Dirk is the better leader and a better all-around player.

Dirk Nowitzki. Worst matchup problem in the NBA. Shaq is definately on the downslide of his career.

i have to take dirk.the man 7ft can shoot a 3 pointer out of this world can shoot free throws.unlike Mr.shag he get to much credit lazy can't shoot a three pointer to save his life he always have suck with me. you would think that he would have had lot of prat ice learning how to shoot a free throw.but am still pulling for the heat.long shot i know.
