No, it doesnt seem to be be the british done thing (plus our residential roads / blocks tend to be longer / larger). Not since the end of WW2 / the queen's coronation anyway. Too many weekend workers, too much traffic, not enough open space, gardens too small etc.
Wish we did though - beautiful summers day like today (doing homework out in the garden, wi-fi + outdoors viewable LCD = fantastic!) it would be awesome. Get a BBQ going, crack out some beers, put a little party music on, get about a hundred neighbours together who might not otherwise meet up...
too many old folks live round here though, think there'd be complaints :-)

I wish we did! When I was a kid growing up, all the houses on our street coordinated our own neighborhood party, but people are too security-conscious today and afraid to get to know their neighbors, so I barely know the people who live on each side of me, much less the people who live four doors down! :o(
I've never heard of church or fire department sponsored block parties, but they sound like a good idea. Maybe people would be more inclined to go to something like that since it wasn't coordinated by the individuals living on their road. I'll have to look into that!

Fire Departments do it here and some neighborhoods do it as well. My neighborhood does one every year at a differant house. The neighborhood ones are private, not sponsored by anyone.

I just met a neighbour the other day and I suggested we have an outdoor bbq, get to meet all the other neighbours. I hope we can do something like that.

They have one right here on this block, but every year they tell me I have to stay inside my home and tend to the coat rack, even tho no one ever drops off a coat.

No, we're the ONLY house on our "block", so it would be a pretty boring "block party"! :)
