First, there is no such thing as an original idea. Dan Brown, of "The Da Vinci Code" even had a plagerism trial that went in his favor.
You can whisper all you want, but JK has never gone to trial over that issue.
Second, the books are finely written and emotionally evocative. It is a complete world that she has presented to us and it is a book that both children and adults enjoy.
Finally, it taps into that great tradition of fantasy books from The Island ("Lord of the Rings" and "Narnia") that feed into the myth and legends genre.

She didn't just steal ideas, she stole whole characters, that's true... But the books are great, fun to read, you get connected to characters, cry when something bad happens and so on... She has a great way of telling the story!
The story is getting more and more complex with every book, it has all the elements needed to keep you attention so you can't leave the book until you've read it all...
Why are people making such a fuss about it, it's a great book, try reading it and you'll see... Why wasting so much energy trying to disapprove a book... As if someone is forcing you to read it...

Stealing ideas and using them is not a bad thing as long as you use your own words and use other things as well. Harry Potter books are magical and entertaining. I love them. They also resemble something deeper than the story tells. About life not fitting in etc. I think that its excellent for kids and adults alike to read. Anything that's not a comic book is great for children to read. They are reading and not getting into trouble. Isn't that better?

well, if you started reading harry potter books when you're young, you'd think its the most awesome book series ever. I actually got addicted to it 'cause I love fantasies, but when you read it over and over, you'll totally get sick of it. Maybe she got the idea of the "wizard and witches, trolls and centaurs etc." from the Chronicles of Narnia. MAYBE. what's so great about harry potter? when you're still a kid, you like it 'cause it has magic and whatever, but when you think about it, what if you broke Voldemort's wand?? or harry's?? I don't think they can fight back without it. when you grow up you think more about actual combat that DOES NOT include magic only

A lot of authors are accused of stealing ideas. It is difficult to prove something like that one way or the other.
As for the popularity of the books, as a parent I have to say I love that my boys WANT to read them. I love the fact that they are not talked down to in the books. I like the fact that when Cedric dies, Harry reacts. ( I am so sick of people dying in books and movies and every one just shrugs it off)

it is for kids...not intended for adults (are you an adult?) It is a great series. The author did not steal the ideas...she is very creative. If she had "borrowed" some ideas, someone would of done something about it by now. Maybe you should try to read the books....

It is a wonderful series of books.
Rumors of her stealing ideas do not affect the quality of the work. People also claim Shakespeare stole writings.
