It's possible you were absent the day they taught US history in US history class. Well we had a little war called the US Civil War. The North fought and defeated the South. Some in the South are still very bitter. Driving cross country, via the southern route, I felt not only racial tensions, but being called a Yankee, twice, was rather upsetting. I sarcastically responded both times with "I'm a Red Sox Fan, don't ever call me a Yankee", this proved costly when a cop in Tennessee, pulled me over for speeding.
Advice for those passing through Tennessee: Nashville, Memphis and I guess Knoxville are safe, everything inbetween... you might want to give a few more years. They're still fighting the War.

This site may be of some interest. Funny how quickly people have forgotten the political party of slave owners and what political party abolished slavery.
Just consider, most of those racist red necks in the South today, could very well be... Democrats.

Yea im a redneck, no not inbreed type either, if you love your country, and dont take crap off pple and stand up for what you believe in and just like to have fun then your a redneck, and no not all southern ppl are racist, it all has to do with how you were raised, and you dont have to be racist againts just other colors or races you can also be a racist against your own ppl, its not just a white/black, it can also be white/white hate ya know. And everyone may say there not racist but everyone does have a little raceism in them they just choose to deny it. and its not just a southern thing to be racist, racism is all over its not just condined to the south, and there is such a misjudgement on rednecks because of tv everyone assums that they are all inbreeds and there not, and believe it or not Southerners are the most polite ppl you could ever meet, just because i have a Confederate Flag Flyin doesnt make me a racist it just shows that i have pride for my southern heratige and that i want to keep it that way, i dont want muslims tellin me how to live or anyone else, Southern Born and Southern bread Ill be Southern Till the Day Im Dead.

I am from Georgia and I am not a redneck and I think that there are racists everywhere but the reason you see more of it in the south is because we live with most of the black people in the United States with the exceptions of New York and Chicago which became large black communities dring the Great Migration of the 1920's. If you look you will see in reality that most black congressmen are from the south actually. So why do we still have rednecks because there is poverty in the south and when you are uneducated in the south the sad reality of it is the legacy of slavery had always pitted poor whites and poor blacks against each other. Under slavery only about 20% of whites could afford slaves and the other 80% competed for jobs against slaves who of course had to work for nothing so many whites also lived in squallor and that produced the origins of applachian "redneck" culture. The alternative though are whites like myself I am a socialist and in college working toward a BA degree in African History so let's not generalize too much. I will say in my experience the less religious white southerners are the more liberal they tend to be on race because white southern churches often push certain attitudes and use the Bible to defend them for instance preaching that interracial marriage is a sin by cherrypicking verses in Leviticus. This is an arguement this can be supported using history for instance the Southern Baptist church was originally formed by Baptist who broke away in support of slavery and were offended by Northern Baptist preachers who called slavery a sin. So the origins of this are in the Civil War and out of it came something historians like The Lost Cause religion which blended myths about blacks with Boblical passages the most famous teaching of this school being The Curse of Ham which attempting to justify slavery using the Bible. So I hope that answers your question.

I just moved to the South and there isn't just racism here - they are also SEXIST! I have had WAY to many situations since being here where I've been talked down to or talked to as if I can't understand anything more complex then a cooking recipe because I'm a woman. It's appalling and I am certainly not used to it (and don't intend to get used to it).
