people with dark complexion are always considered to be inferior to the ones with fair complexion in INDIA. This way of thought is actually planted in to almost all indians' brains. Is'nt it unfair??

Yes Indians are racists and it is unfair to discriminate! There are thousands of castes ,sub castes which still exist in Indians today, according to which people are married. It does not mean that marriage of people with different castes is illegal or is forbidden. People show that they don't mind marriages of different-caste people. But I'd say one's parents have great courage, and educated and are really the ones who are needed to live in this world for allowing their children to marry different caste

I'm an American white female married to an India light skin-ed male and have lived in India for over a year now. what i have seen is that no matter what we are we what to be different in America most girls want a nice dark tan and here they want light skin. so is it the culture or influences of marketers? as for marriages. ours was not arranged but his brothers was and we have more culture problems than they do so is it the the parents might know a little more and want to see the children happy and secure? is it racist i don't feel it is i feel it is the way the child is brought up and by the way i was welcomed to the family with open arms. as far a the caste system yes that is still very important right or wrong but the way i see it again it is parents wanting the best for the child plus the government isn't helping with the way lower caste is still treated hope this helps somewhat

It is, but that is actually a societal norm throughout that area and not just India. Some Persian cultures also follow the tradition of preserving traditional "aryan" traits by restricting interracial mating. It is the way it has been for some time, and the Bolliwood movies are doing nothing but worsening the situation.

Unfortunately its not just Indians - many races, cultures, societies and nations place more prestige and status with people of lighter skin colour. Whites vs. blacks in America, Spanish (and whiter Europeans) vs mestizo natives in Latin America/Mexico, Indians in India, South Africans, Italians from the North vs South, etc etc.
The irony is that getting a tan is considered attractive :-)

And you see this perpetrated in the media & fashion and on TV as well - for the most part, the standard of beauty is a certain look that involves lighter and whiter features. Its a generalisation, but it happens.

I think things are changing slowly, and diversity is being appreciated more, but there is still a stigma & status associated with the colour of one's skin.

I don't believe this belief is just in India. It is worldwide. So that statement makes us all inferior! We all come in this world one way and all leave the same way.
It is sad when one of us thinks because we are this way or look a certain look we are better than our neighbor or sister or brother. That is why it is important for us to continue to bring these things to the front and discuss it.
I am sorry if you were hurt by somthing like this.

It's unfair but is true. I wouldn't call it racist, though. A dark girl from a caste (or race) will be thought inferior to a fair girl from the same caste.

its not the question of dark people being inferior or superior. its just that in india, even 2day its parents who more or less still play an important role in selecting a life partner for their children.the reason they dont like individuals with a darker complexion is that they fear that the children born of this union will also turn out 2 b dark.thats all there is 2 it.where did u get the ridiculous notion of inferiority/superiority ??

Yes, it's very sad actually. It's not only India that has this way of thinking -- look at how people in North America treat African Americans compared to non African Americans. It's very very racist and unfair because the skin color of anyone should never matter. God made us ALL EQUAL, regardless of skin color or ethnicity. I hope this changes in our future.

India has an elaborate caste system based on skin color. Indian must marry from their own caste and usually a relative.

I wouldn't consider it racist, more of a preference. I think it's funny that in many countries, different shades of skin are looked up to or preferred. Such as here in the U.S, lots of people that may be white, would like to have a nice tan! lol
