Many, many people have climbed Mt. Everest, but the first officially recorded climb was done by Sir Edmund Hillary, accompanied by his Sherpa guide, 'Tiger' Tenzig.
But just because the western world has only kept records recently, and then only of western climbers, that doesn't mean no one else climbed it previously, with or without the sanction of the climbing association or the knowledge of the world book of records keepers. I'm sure previous generations of Sherpas climbed it, simply because it was there, which is pretty close to the reason Hillary and all those who followed him did it.
