If you do the same thing to both sides of an equation it is ok...for example:

0.5x = 4

ok...this is pretty simple, and you can probably do it in your head, but pay attention to what you do in your head. Likely you will multiply both sides by two:

(0.5x) * 2 = 4 * 2

Since 0.5 * 2 = 1, then x = 8...

Now you are probably thinking "of course", but the same is true with adding and subtracting from both sides:

If x - 10 = 60 then it is easy to do in your head....you just add 10 to both sides and get x= 70.

Your equation is just a combination of a few steps. If x/3 +2 = 5, then subtracting 2 from both sides is an easy way to get rid of one of the numbers and simplifying the equation.

x/3+=5
x/3+2-2=5-2

the -2 is practicly part of the algebra the 5-2 means 5 minus 2

I think what you meant is you have the equation

x/3+2=5

to solve
so you first you subtract 2 from both sides
which is where x/3+2-2=5-2 comes from; its basically a rule for equality the = sign means both sides are equal therefor to keep them equal you must do the same to both sides

from there it becomes x/3=3 which you already solved

hope this helps

They are showing you how to figure out the value of 'x'. To do this, you need to take away all of the other stuff around 'x' in steps. To get rid of the +2, you need to do the opposite (subtract 2). To keep everything equal, you have to subtract 2 from both sides. The same rule is shown in the second step, which is to get rid of the /3 by doing the opposite (x3) to both sides.

Assuming your original equation was x/3+2 = 5
In order to solve for a variable (in this case x) in a liner equation we want to isolate the variable. In this case, we want x by itself. So we subtract 2 from both sides. That's were -2 and -2 came from.
