to a child: say you need the 'magical word' before doing or giving anything.
to an adult: never hesitate to be very very polite, so that you'll be the other's mirror.

Practice what you preach and lead by example. Start saying "thank you" and then wait for them to say it when you think you should get one or I just say thank you for them and they get the hint.
