83% of African Americans voted for John Kerry in 2004. In 2000 90% cast votes for Al Gore so they assume based on statistics. The Republicans on this thread seem to assume likewise because you are black you are on welfare and I would argue that assumption is worse in terms of being motivated by racism. As a historian I think the black community has traditionally supported Democrats certainly not right after the Civil War when the KKK controlled the Democratic Party in the south and almost all blacks were Republicans but during th administration of FDR and his new deal program blacks begin to support Democrats not because of welfare which is a racist suggestion but becaue FDR gave government jobs to blacks by integrating the armed forces and creating the Tennesse Valley Authority and other job programs. So to set the record straight byt he time LBJ implemented welfare in the Great Society of the 1960's blacks already voted heavily Democratic and also it should be remembered more whites draw welfare checks each year than blacks if you look up the statistics at the Department of Labor webpage. Finally for the record I am a third party member.

That grammar is a bad joke. I'm a republican & neither racist or assuming anything. There are certainly more whites on welfare than blacks, but a much higher percentage of blacks, but that's neither here nor there.

However, Democrats do take the black vote for granted. They never listen to or do anything for them as a voting block, cause what are they going to do vote for a republican? There are plenty of traditional religious blacks out there that if you took away the labels would agree with much more of the republican social agenda. I think democrats tend to pay them lip service & use scare tactics to get them to the poles. Remember it was the southern Democratic Party, not republicans, that enacted Jim Crow & blocked civil rights.

I know we have whack jobs voting for us, just as there’s equally insane weirdoes on the left, and I think we’d all prefer they didn’t exist, or at least that they didn’t vote for either of our parties. I do hope we take some steps here in the future to move beyond the race issue. I know there are still problems, but democrats seem to me to make it worse to keep the voting block enslaved. Strategically, I hope republicans will run a black candidate for President soon. I know Rice (who wouldn’t win) & Powell (who would) have both said they won’t run, but I’m hopeful we can put JC Watts up as VP to balance someone like Rudy/Romney on our ticket. I know you’re assuming we’d do something like that in hopes of grabbing part of the black vote, and I know that wouldn’t happen, but if we actually elected such a person I think that could be an olive branch to begin talking about real issues & get beyond race as an issue in itself.

The dems have made careers (literally) out of keeping the black population under their thumb. It completely blows their mind when a black person thinks for themself and recognizes that the DEMS are the one keeping the blacks down.

It is because the democrat party embraces a victim mentality with the black population and offers to give them assistance. They think that is what the black population wants. We all know that isn't true, everyone wants to be able to stand on their own two feet and not rely on the government.
