It's really sad. The condition of our society and it's morals are pathetic. I think that most people are just selfish and only look out for themselves. Empathy is nonexistent, therefore, common courtesy has gone out the window. I think that the stress of today's lifestyles, play a part in lack of courtesy, as well.

F you, you a'hole!
Oh wait, I am not a troll.
They do. If they know the other person. They are very less likely to show courtesy if they don't.
You really don't have road rage with people you know. If you recognize them, you back off a bit.
No courtesy means no recognition. You don't even begin to understand the other person.
People do not show courtesy because there are too many people they meet up with they do not have the foggiest about. Total strangers.
Small towns, you show courtesy. Larger towns, you show less. Teeming masses... Well you get the picture. You don't know enough about them to show courtesy.
If you have personal interactions, even with a total stranger, well, you react to them, and courtesy is the way you start. But you are in a subway station with 5,000 other people you will never know anything about? What, you are shocked courtesy is breaking down?
And if you find someone that shows you courtesy, exactly how do you reply to it?
Like now.
You cannot reply to me directly. How do you show courtesy back in this situation?
Gave you a reasonable answer to your question, and I don't want any damned 10 points, how do you return the courtesy? I am a total stranger on the Internet.
Think about it.

Regretfully people these days typically look out for themselves only.
True honor, chivalry, and politeness has gone and may never return.
If we were to travel back in time a bit, we had honor, chivalry and people were polite (most certainly civil), at least the majority were.
The disadvantage of that time is that many people were suppressed (minorities in the United States, women, children, etc) and information was hidden on a wide scale. Mass communication was not really established yet and the world was a different place.
In this litigious society, many people are afraid to go out of their way to help others. That, mixed with the horrors we see in the news and in the movies surrounding people that involve themselves in the lives of others, well it's no wonder that people would rather stick to their own lives and ignore those around them.
Everyone in a hurry to get from point a to point b that they don't see the in-between and they will rationalize it by saying that someone will help the person, or that person can always walk to the nearest gas station, or something similar.
It's sad.
While I hope for the halcyon days of yore with the sheer innocence of Andy and Opie or similar shows, I understand that once the bell has been rung, it cannot be unrung.
I hope that someday we as a people can evolve past what we are now and start to treat those around us as our brothers and sisters.
I hope that this helps.
Love as always,
Sebastian

Heh...
being 'courteous' and charitable to people is not my station in life.
I'm not "of the court" of gentlemen and ladies of high estate. I'm not going to submit to social norms when they're the very problem I and everyone face. Take your "good mornings" "how do you dos?" "Sirs and Madams" back to the decrepit museum where you found it. Royalty as exhibit. Royalty as circus show and parade.
Why are we pretending to like each other? because it's practical. Because intolerance causes greatly inefficient problems. WHY again must we tolerate totalitarianism? totalitarianism OF EVEN quotidian social interactions?! I asked this loaded question and only two people answered it. "Because we all know what happens when we don't tolerate each other".
Tolerance is intolerable... It's exactly to say "that which I cannot bear, I will ignore". These social conventions: "how is the weather," "oh I think you made a mistake in your reasoning, sir"... are instantiated on us, to keep us from facing WHAT'S Really pressing, What's REALLY on our Minds.

You've got to think positively.Think about it, although you can't change people with no courtesy, you can start by treating others with courtesy. It all begins with oneself. If everybody in this world acknowledge this fact, the world'll be a better place!

because the culture we live in stresses "independence" and an instant gratification mentality; courtesy takes selflessness and a striving to put another's needs above ones own need....and lets face it our culture as a whole does not stress these values anymore
