What stuff do I HAVE to move from one hard drive to the other (diallers? for instance??) Do I have to re-install things like scanner, mouse, printer etc. with their installation discs? I do not have crossover cable etc. and would not know where to start when taking things out of one to put into another - I am a novice at this and this is the first time I have moved from one pc to another.

Backup your data on the old computer and copy it to the new computer. Any programs or device drives, just install like you did the first time.

Remove the hard disk from the old computer, change the jumpers on the back to make it a slave (there is usually a little diagram near to the jumpers), open the new computer and connect it to the spare 4 pin power supply and spare ribbon cable connector that you should find inside. Reboot new computer and it should recognise the extra hard drive. Transfer files using Windows Explorer in the normal way.

If there is no spare ribbon (IDE) cable, you could temporarily disconnect one of the other drives.

If you are on a network, connect both PCs to the network and share the hard drive of the old PC.

You can buy a crossover cable (either serial, parallel or ethernet). This will allow your two PCs to talk as if on a network but without a switch or router. NOTE: a straight-through connection will not work - the input from one must connect to the output on the other, so at least one pair of cables is reversed inside one of the connectors. Crossover cables are really only worth the money if it's a job you expect to be doing a lot.

You could also buy a portable external hard drive which connects via USB. I got a 40Mb one recently for around £60 but they may well be cheaper now. This will allow you to have extra storage space in the future with the advantage that you can take it to almost any PC and plug it in and immediately have all your data with you (good for large music files or graphics). You can, of course use it to transfer all your data from one PC to the other.

Get a KVM (keyboard, video, and mouse) switch kit and a wired or wireless router. Connect everything together and create a network. Go to control panel and click on network wizard to set up a home network. Now, you can run two computers at once and exchanging files. Make the best use of both computers.

the most simple way to do this is store your files on a web hoster there are plenty out there you can use then you can put your new pretty pc together , go to the hoster and just like magic , there they all there!

buy a crossover cable, set up an ad hoc network between them, and transfer whatever you want

probably the easiest would be just to burn the files to a cd/dvd and transfer them that way.
