It was started by a man that owned a movie theater years and years ago. He wanted something simple that people could eat while watching the movie. Thus, The Popcorn Phenomenon.

NPR actually did a story about this, Popcorn is so popular in part because it is the traditional thing to eat when you go to the movies. In fact, popcorn was at first considered a very popular snack that you could only get by going to the movie theatre, it was kind of a proprietary secret between the movie business and the suppliers, and it was so successful and so profitable, at one point theatre owners actually made more money selling popcorn than they did showing the movies! For a time, many felt they were showing the movies just to trick people to come into the theatre to buy popcorn. Then, when air conditioning was invented, for a long time the only places that actually would pay the huge cost for air conditioning was the movie theatres, which would advertises as 'air conditioned,' again to get people to come inside and buy popcorn, and maybe it it was really hot they would stay all day and eat five or six bags of popcorn.
The addition of other snack items came along much later, and while they are still popular and make money for the theatre, many owners feel that they would make better profits if they still sold only popcorn because it is such a low overhead item.
BTW, while it was not in the story on NPR, the other answerer who mentioned that you would need something to drink with the popcorn probably has a VERY good point!

No other snack can be got ready so easily and readily and so fresh and hot and tasty with salt or sweet etc and handy and convenient never sticks to your hand or dirties the seats etc and no specail packing etc needed.May be peanuts/wafers too can claim an equal footing but pop corn is the best and remember easily digested too and stomach filling. And at peanut cost.
Now you put other eatables and mark the plus/ minus points and put to vote .

Once I took a tuna fish sandwich to the movies and it just wasn't the same.
Anyway, popcorn is crunchy, salty, buttery, you can eat it with your fingers and you don't have to look at it when you're watching a movie. The perfect movie snack.
