See whats on near to home. My son liked visiting a city farm, seeing the chicks hatch out, being mugged by goats and scratching a pig.
We found a park with an ace adventure playground.
Feed the ducks and have a picnic in the park.
Go to a car boot sale and give them each £1, have a friendly competition to see who gets most for their money.
Track down every single one of the oddball local museums, some of them do great activities for kids.
Cinemas are cheaper in the week before midday.
See if theres a local tourist info place and see what they advertise.

Visit all the local parks, especially the state or national ones. . .hike the trails (or push the little ones in strollers) or take bikes. My kids love that kind of thing. In fact, they're pretty happy with walks right near the house. Do the whole picnic thing, take bubbles, balls and frizbees.

Down to the beach or park, buy them an ice lolly, bring their bikes/roller blades and they'll be as happy as larry. They'll especially like it if there are ducks or swans to feed.
