Java Runtime Environment - A Group of files which are required to run your Java Program. Java Programs are Portable to any Operating system. JRE is specific to a given operating system and is the bridge between the Java program and the operating system.

You can heat milk on a stove and also in a microwave. for stove you need a steel container and for microwave you need a plastic container. You can not interchange the containers although the product remains the same and you get the same end result. JRE is like a container. Your Java Program is the milk and the Heat source is the Operating System.
