The basics:
hammer
pliers
crescent wrench
screwdrivers *
tape measure
utility knife and blades
Non-essential but handy:
channel locks
needlenose pliers
medium pipe wrench
prybar
wire strippers
hand saw
hack saw
heavy scissors
socket set *
fasteners:
duct, masking and electrical tape
all-purpose glue
super glue
wall anchors
assorted nails and screws
wire nuts
* For your screwdrivers, I'd suggest an interchangeable bit driver with a bit kit. Basically with one screwdriver, you'd get 2 size flathead, 3 size phillips, 8 torx bits, 8 allen (hex) bits, a 1/4" socket adapter, and in some cases, sockets ranging from 1/4"-5/8". I'm including this link just as an example, you can buy these kits at any hardware store.

Ok, for the basics...
Hammer (claw)
Screwdriver (one of those types that you can put the different bits in the head, wonderful job!)
Pair of Channel locks, (forget the pliers, these are more versatile).
Hacksaw (few different types of blades, NOT IN THE TOOLBOX, but stored elsewhere).
Socket set, I/2" sockets, and maybe deepwell, also, (standard set from 1/4 to 1")
Vice Grips, (also acts like a clamp).
Small roll of sand paper 1" wide, (reall handy).
Knife (razor knife, maybe the Sears cutter knife)
Wrenches (standard set 1/4 - 1")
Allen Wrenches (standard set).
This will get you started on the basics.
When you finally get a "place of your own", I would suggest you get a tool box, from sears(one of those stackable types), and the entire selection of tools that they display, (about 1500 bucks I think...it will be the LAST SET of tools you will ever need--->UNLESS YOU HAVE A BROTHER IN LAW THAT BORROWS YOUR TOOLS, THEN "LOCK THEM UP"!!!!!!
Oh, for your first and ONLY ladder, I suggest the "Little Giant"... Only thing you will ever need again!
I wish you well...
Jesse

16-oz. curved claw hammer (smooth head, NOT waffled)
This is the perfect all-purpose hammer. It's not too heavy, so it won't strain your wrist, yet it's heavy enough so you won't be under-gunned.
25-foot Stanley FatMax Tape Measure
I love this tape measure because it's fat — an inch wide. The width allows you to read the numbers more easily, and the tape doesn't bend when you pull it out past a few feet.
10-inch Channellock Tongue-and-Groove Pliers
These adjustable pliers fit around various-size plumbing fittings and nuts. Plus, because of their shape, they're easy to control.
Retractable Utility Knife (with blade storage in handle)
You will use this knife for cutting everything from carpet to vinyl tiles to drywall, and for stripping wires. The blade is also easy to replace and stores conveniently in the handle.
Ratcheting Screwdriver (with multiple bits)
The multiple bits change out easily, depending on whether you need a small or large Phillips or a slotted head. The ratcheting action allows you to keep steady pressure on the head of the screw while simply twisting the handle in place.

Claw hammer, philips and straight head screwdrivers, pliers, ruler, wire cutter, measuring tape, screws, nails, electrical tape.
And get a box to hold everything.
That should be enough for starters.

hammer, multi screwdriver ( different blades), nails, screws, duct tape, hardware for hanging pictures (you can buy a small variety pack of this), hand saw, pliers. that should be a good start. Oh, a staple gun is always nice to have as well.

Duck tape and WD40. That all you need. If it moves and it's not suppose to, use duck tape. If it's suppose to move and it doesn't, use WD40. That takes care of everything......LOL
