I'm afraid of dancing in public, because I fear getting judged. I'm not that bad, but I can't bring my self to do it. I get overwhelmed with embarrasment, but I do enjoy dancing (when I'm alone). What can I do? Where there any people who were the same and overcame this?

JUST FORGET ABOUT THE PUBLIC!
PRETEND THEY ARE NOT THERE!
AND ENJOY YOURSELF!

I had the same problem..
Fear, doubts, thoughts "You are not good enough, don't go anywhere 'cause you'd be judged and everyone would laugh at your steps"... But I can say I overcame this problem so yes, there are people who were in the same situation, I am one of them.

In fact, I did nothing special or difficult. I like music so everytime when I had the chance (and I was alone, of course:) ) I enjoyed it in my room and I was singing quietly and dancing while listening to music. And this "dancing with myself" became my habbit :)
So one night my best friend literally drag me out and made me to go with her to a disco club. Lol.. I was such a cartoon - cause everyone were dancing there and I was sitting and looking.. But then I stood up, I went to the dance floor. And the miracle happened!! :)))

My best friend couldn't close her mouth :"You are dancing so good!.." and some guys immediately made a circle around me!!
It was a great night, I will never forget it 'cause it made me overcome my own fear and it showed me I can be strong.

Dear, don't be shy, don't feel shame - it is useless. :) Use my method, it is wierd but works, I guarantee.
I wish you good luck, don't give up!

Dear Rebel, I didn't start dancing until I was 27. My roommates finally dragged be down to the local dance place where nobody cared what you looked liked or how you moved. It took a while to work through the fear--and later now I realize that I had a lot of unresolved body issues. Just love who you are right now, because this is it: there are no dress rehearsals, as they say. Have fun and silence that voice that starts yammering while you are bustin' your groove!

You can dance with your eyes closed. Thats what I did at first, then the more you dance the more you should open your eyes. Another good thing to do is think so what if I dance in public, no one can stop me. When you dance in public pretend no one is there and be yourself.

Join a beginner country line dance class. This way everyone is at the same level as you. You will get confidence and be able to do other types of dancing as well.

It takes alot of training to feel comfortable. First, always dance with a close friend that will make you feel at safe and care-free, and you will eventually feel better. Second, who cares what others think? You only have one shot here on earth so why waste it worrying about how you look?

Just do it.
And bring a friend along with you, to do whats called 'damage control' if you choose to drink before dancing. That way, if you start making a fool of yourself, your friend can come and dance you off the dance floor and into a cab.

i was the same. what i did was that when im in public now, and im dancing, i put a picture of the one i love in my head, and think of him the whole time. he makes me feel beautiful and confident... so i pretend there is no one there but me and him. if u dont have a love, then think of yourself as being in a field or alone on stage and dance your heart out.

Everyone on the dance floor is too preoccupied with wondering how they look to notice you.... so get out there and strut your stuff.
