You mean book smarts and street smarts.

The biggest test is life as what the first respondent said. Those don't have a simple solution most of the time. Answers will differ from individuals as their emotional, environment, values and other factors enter the overall picture in their decision making. It is very subjective.

Then you have mathematical scores like IQ tests (MENSA) and SATs to judge your knowledge, mathematical, language, memory retention and problem solving skills. Book smarts.

The General Intelligence Factor, g

Despite some popular assertions, a single factor for intelligence, called g, can be measured with IQ tests and does predict success in life.

Extracting g

Early in the century-old study of intelligence, researchers discovered that all tests of mental ability ranked individuals in about the same way.

Although mental tests are often designed to measure specific domains of cognition--verbal fluency, say, or mathematical skill, spatial visualization or memory--people who do well on one kind of test tend to do well on the others, and people who do poorly generally do so across the board.

This overlap, or intercorrelation, suggests that all such tests measure some global element of intellectual ability as well as specific cognitive skills.

In recent decades, psychologists have devoted much effort to isolating that general factor, which is abbreviated g, from the other aspects of cognitive ability gauged in mental tests.

There is no test needed to figure out a 'smart guy' is whether smart or dumbass!! It's a human common sense to find out ourselves!

no u cant tell if a "smart guy" is really smart, cuz most men seem amazing, wonderful, smart, sexy, honest, loving...etc. in the beginning, but its all a bunch of crap. as soon as u have sex with em or make their dinner or wash their laundry or tel them u love them, they turn into the trailer-trash, butt-scratching, stinky-farting, pee on u in the shower and laugh about it, takes all ur good stuff and ruins it, i'll cheat on u if u dont get naked kind of guy. but i hope u find that one-in-a-million great guy n e way...but he'll still pee on u in the shower and laugh about it. =/

Maybe if he doesn't feel the need to prove it?... What's your definition of a smart guy?

You can tell if he's really smart if he doesnt try to show he's smart. In that way, nobody knows he's smart, so nobody can outsmart him.

Find out how he learned and how broad his knowledge is.

A rocket scientist may rock at NASA but have no concept of Spelling.

A poet may be worldly brilliant but not be able to do simple algebra.

Everyone has a wide variety of interests and opinions. Find out what his are, why he feels that way and thinks that, and then you'll know.

he who knows not, and knows not that he knows not is a fool, shun him.
he who knows not, and knows he knows not is a student, teach him.
he who knows, and knows not that he knows is asleep, wake him.
he who knows, and knows that he knows is wise, follow him.
i have found that the people i considered smart didn't feel that they had to prove it, or made an attempt to. however, i have come across many people who consider themselves smart, and usually when they open their mouths to prove it, it leaves little doubt just how smart they really are.
