It's probably a way of determining the subscripts when writing the formula for a compound. Often times the charge on one ion becomes the subscript of the other. A better illustration of the intent would be something like: Al3+ : O2- 3 : 2 ↘ ↙ 2 : 3 Al2O3 is the formula for aluminum oxide.
