It was considered wise to look to the stars at planting times to see if crop yields would be good or bad, therefore denoting lean times or hard times. Somebody who looked (often) at the position of the stars would be able to tell roughly what time of year it was, (when calendars weren't even thought of), and therefore if it was the right time to plant wheat that would then ripen when the sun was at its hottest. Its not a great jump from star gazing to predict crop success or failure, to star gazing to predict any of the future.
