In Australia, where I live, there is a general opinion that Americans have a very poor education and most couldn't even find their own country on a map of the world, let alone any others. They say that all the thinkers in America immigrated from other countries where education is better. Is there any truth in this rumour? Just curious what others think.

That is the general opinion all over the world at the moment, but the truth of the matter is that Americans are no less educated than any one else in any other country. I pinpoint the blame on the examples you pointed out as mere cases of general human stupidity. And unfortunately for most, the stupid people are often the most vocal. I think it's safe to say that Americans are no less intelligent that any other country's population, as idiocy is a general characteristic of humanity that is non-specific to any group of people. America's stupids are just more vocal, and Americans are a huge news topic at the moment, so there is this sudden wave of "Look at America". This causes people to look at what idiots in our country are doing and forget that they have morons in their country as well. Education in America is fine. People are just dumb.

We have the same rumor about oursleves. I know that out of 100 people I meet 99 of them will be morons.

Here's the trick. Our politics have always been based on minority rights, majority rule. That means while the majority should usually get there way, it wont impose on the minority. So we have many very vocal minority groups that get all the media attention. Sadly, they tend to be morons or lead by morons.

Add to this that Amercians are starting to feel like the world owes them something and we have a sad current state of affairs.

Once upon a time you had to be smart to make it in America. In fact just being able to move to America was a huge deal because it meant that you had something to offer society and had been accepted by the very tough U.S. immigration policies. It also meant you had saved up enough money to make the very expensive trip and pay the very high immigration fees.

Now we all seem to think we are owed our jobs and our homes and if someone spills coffee on us we sue. It's very sad.

Add to it all that most High School seniors can't find the U.S. capital on a map and yeah, the rumors that Americans are stupid grows pretty fast.

When the reports come out ranking education the USA is and has been no. one for some time. I should qualify that by saying best schooled rather than educated. The USA is a large nation and most there do not travel to other parts of the world. Most do not realize how things are in other lands. How many of your friends have passports. Americans do need to get out and see for themselves how it is so they could appreciate what they have.

Yes, there are plenty of outspoken, ignorant, judgemental, and insensitive people in America. And many are too wrapped up in their own lives to care about whats going on with the rest of the world.
However I like to believe there are just as many well educated, accepting people too. Who are trying to make the world, as well as their own back yard a better place.
Believe me, we are just as hard on our own country as the rest of the world is. Especially when it does something stupid like raise gas prices to insane or try and ban gay marriage. However, I'm only seventeen and cannot vote, therefor my government does not care about my opinions yet. And even though we have a complete (pardon my french) **** as our president right now. He was a better choice than Kerry or Gore. Remember, we only had a couple of options and we did our best in trying to pick the lesser idiot.

Well I think your ignorant question should be changed. Honestly, look at the major inventions, the best colleges, the best doctors, tell me where are they? The US. From what I have found out, Australians (at least the ones with computers) are assholes, and I know several. Remind me, Yahoo is a US company right, well obviously there aren't dumb rednecks making this website considering it's the most used website in the world.

Well I do suppose it depends on who you ask. Unfortunately there are loads of idiots in the US (and around the world as well).
It also seems that the media loves to "show off" these idiots whenever they can.

However the US is also the home of alot of highly intelligent people who just don't go around bashing people about the head and shoulders with their intelligence like the idiots do.

There are some intellegent people here. But mostly they are dumbasses, that is why they chose such a president twice, only a bunch of airheads is capable of doing so. These people don't have any idea about economic growth of US, what they like to see is a bully. Stupid president chosen by Airheads, serves them right I suppose. Good observation mate.
