Since you are travelling by road, and taking your car, start very early in the morning, at around 4 AM, to avoid highway traffic. Take NH 1 from Delhi upto Ambala. At Ambala, turn north towards Shimla on the NH 22. At Zirakpur, take the Bypass to avoid Chandigarh and Panchkula. I have travelled this section, and it took nearly 9 hrs, with a food stop.
Solan is on the way to Shimla on NH22... not very much to see though. To stay at Shimla you will have to think of a suitable place to park the car?
Cecil Oberoi has a huge parking, but is expensive no doubt. But, you can opt for the HPTDC hotels-
Hotel Peterhoff or Hotel Holiday Home (Cart Road).
HPTDC properties always have car parks within the premise. Shimla is notoriously lacking in space. Budget hotels are all road side with NO parking.Contact HPTDC's Delhi office at CHANDERLOK BUILDING , 36, JANPATH, NEW DELHI-110001.Tel(011)23325320, 23324764, Fax (011)23731072.
