NO. That is a capital n followed by a capital o. It feels nice to believe that in India women get treated well by men but the truth is always sour. Agreed that there are cases of women not being treated well all over the world and also that in India there are cases where men treat their women very well. In india most of the population is in the rural areas. Speaking on an average ,cross your chest and you will know that women are not treated well by men. I have been in different countries and seen different people. In India , i think it is deep rooted that women are secondary and it is norm to treat them like dirt.

From my view I think about 50% are treated well and the remaining 50% are not. But this is fast changing, if you would have asked this question something like 15 years back, I would have said 15% to Yes and a whopping 85% to No.

Literacy & Education is on the rise and so is women independance. The current literacy rate in India is 61%. The major portion of the 50% to which I said No, would come from the rural areas which is very significant. The urban population is yet much smaller in comparison.

This is also keeping in mind the average male:female ratio of 1.06 as against a world average of 0.95

Women being treated badly or nicely isn`t a problem of any one country. Rapes are commited at a far more frequency in USA than in India. Domestic Violence is prevalaent in every country of the world.
So one cannot just point out specific, country or culture. All muslim women are not happy with the "islamic laws" that is imposed on them and some are happy with that!!

A boy raised in a family which is stable and in which each member respects the other would never disrespect a woman be he from rural India , Urban India or US or UK.

In general Yes.

Added:
Emiratswonders refered to women paying men to marry. Well others can say men are secondry as they are bought by woman !!

Both are silly notions. All over the world people keep marrying for money , status etc.

the concept of dowery was very well established in west too. After all it is an english word.

In India married woman got her inheritence in form of dowery at the time of her marriage. Hindu joint family acts as a trust all sons and unmarried daughters are part of it.

When a woman gets married she gets her share and now part of her new family. The dowery enabled couples base for starting a new family.

But most important thing is that A woman has full right over whatever she gets in form of dowery , jewelerry or other gifts at her wedding. Even those gifts she gets from her In laws. All of it is her "Stri dhan" . IF husbands takes it or any part of it He should return it with interest according to law. In fact Hindu it is one of the marriage vows by man that after marriage he will turn all his income over to his wife.

Off course when one is married you can not always be telling your spouse about law! It is all about compromises , give and take and mutual understanding, sacrifice and trust.

Some men are greedy and abusive in India as they are anywhere in the world.

Seeing the literacy rate, poverty, population and such things, crime agaist women no doubt exist. But situation over all is OK. The case are reported. justice is not that easy to get here , but still how many cases are solved satisfactarily in US either. Despite it having much more resourses.

Mostly yes..except for a few odd cases here and there.. but the justice system sucks. Girls get raped everyday but u'll get quick justice only if you're a foreigner. A woman named bilkis Bano was raped in the name of religion during the godhra riots..gang raped by 12 ppl. That was 2 years ago i think. Still no justice. it goes on and on..recently a nurse got raped by a ward boy, so when he was arrested he offered to marry her so that the case would be dropped ! i don know what happened after that.U can't trust police men either. The marine drive case says it all..

Women in India are not treate well by men. Most of them are exploited and ill treated simply because they are women.
Men think that they are superior than women because women have to pay heavy dowries to marry them.

No, they are relegated to second class citizen stasatus and are often forced to do things that their husband or his family wants her to do or risk being ostracized. Also the Caste system does not seem to favor the rights of women.
