There will be a total of 212 boys. If you imagine the top and bottom rows each having 54 boys this makes 108. The left and right rows however will each have 2 less because we've already counted the end ones so these will each have 52 boys in them making 104.
The total is therefore: 108 + 104 = 212.

well you have the first row of 54 boys
then when you move to the next side there are only 53 more boys because you already counted one
the next row has 53 boys because you already counted one of them
