It is not intended to be a chat room at all, nor does it follow a similar format.

A chat room offers a way for people to interact real time. Mostly about nonsense, sometimes about something in particular. Again, people are communicating real time, back and forth.

Yahoo! Answers offers people a way to ask a question, and solicit feedback from other participants. It is not real time, and there is little immediate interaction. It is not intended to be used as a method of direct communication---It is meant to pose questions and share answers.

As mentioned in Yahoo's own description, the topics can be from the silly to the serious, just like a chat room, but it's not a way to communicate like a chat room.

Yahoo is limited in two-way interaction. It can be done but in not "real time". Also it is more structured. In the form of questions and answers. So the topic is more contained. With chat rooms very fast interaction and response time but less structure.

It's different here in that you can't chat with anyone directly. Your responses disappear into oblivion unless you track them, and when you do, there's never going to be a response to your own response. There's nobody really there.

A chatroom is real time...you're talking to a person who's there at that minute, and knows you're there too.
