The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh(Prince Phillip) are on the Civil List. Charles,Prince of Wales, makes his own money from the Duchy of Cornwall. The late Queen Mother used to be on the Civil List. All other Royals are paid an allowance from the Queen. The slimming of the Civil List took place April 1993;the Queen returned the eight-hundred and seventy-nine thousand pounds to the Treasury that would have gone to The Duke of York,The Princess Royal,The Duke of Wessex,Princess Alice, and Princess Margaret. All other Royals had jobs.

You should also bear in mind that Civil List money is also used to maintain Royal palaces, the Queen's Flight, the Royal Train, staff, and overseas official visits. The Maintenance and running of the Royal Yacht was once included, but the yacht has been mothballed to save costs. In 1993,costs were around ten million pounds per annum. The Civil List is separate from the Queen's private income. Also, the Queen pays taxes on all earnings since 1993.

The Royal family get £7 900 000 every year, of which only the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh get paid. The queen uses this money to pay for staff and upkeep of 'their' property, both of which would have to be paid for even if the royal family are abolished. Prince Charles' Duchy of Cornwall actually makes a healthy profit to subsidise some royal spending, as well as employing plenty of people and using popular farming techniques.

Even if all the money was taken away from the royal family it would not be much compared to the overall spend of the UK as a whole. In fact the monarchy costs britons about 60-70p each year each.
