Because there aren't many beautiful women here and they're ashamed of the way they look. If they were attractive they wouldn't hide behind an enhanced picture, they'd be proud to show their real face.
Plus it allows women to hide their real age.

As a man it does not seem like a big deal to post a pic of yourself online or give information away about yourself. I have been in chat rooms when men get mad at each other to the point where they are giving their legitimate addresses out for them to come over there to have a face to face conversation.
Women are "built" different than men in that respect. Women feel more vunerable all together, especially online these days where anyone can find just about anything on anyone. I was stalked at one time online and ever since have become more anonymous online.
Because of this, women are not so ready to post their pic online or a lot of information about themselves as you never know these days who you are talking or who is looking around online. Besides the avatars are cute and puts everyone on the same level.

Avatars are fun and I don't want any person with acess to the internet to be able to see pix of me I would put up. Some people are just creepy and I don't want them to think about how I look. And people might give more or less value to a comment if a person is good or bad looking.

Some of want to remain anonymous online. Putting a real picture of oneself in a public forum can be dangerous...especially for females. This is not a personals site. It can be a relief for women to be heard without the constant crutch of being looked over and womanized.

A picture is worth a thousand words,besides by using an avatar we stay safe from perverted people on-line.I know I'm beautiful inside and out and I don't have to prove it to you or anyone else.

The same reason men don't. It's not safe to put our real picture on the internet. We are better off with the avatar.

Some of the most beautiful women in the world don't want boys flocking to their pictures. They want to seem equal to women who they think aren't nearly attractive as them.
And, lol, though you may be more modest than this, we know there are some girls who have a rather narcissistic subconscious.

Because we can, and because we don't want our pics all over the place. I think avatars are cute personalized digital representations- an ideal of what we'd like, maybe? It's also a safeguard to feel more comfortable. (Example a health question and your next door neighbour sees your pic, embarrassing)

They are mostly zit faced 12 year olds or fat frustrated housewives. Occasionally someone has a real profile and then you may see a picture. But you may regret looking.
