In the first stanza of the song it says,
"My life is brilliant.
My life is brilliant.
My love is pure.
I saw an angel.
Of that I'm sure.
She smiled at me on the subway.
She was with another man.
But I won't lose no sleep on that,
'Cause I've got a plan."
OK SO JAMES BLUNT HAS GOT A PLAN, RIGHT?
Now in the next stanza, he says,
"You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you."
OK, SO LOOKS LIKE THE MAN'S GOT NO PLAN WHATSOEVER, HE JUST LOST THE HOPE.
Is it just me or the are lyrics really self contradictory?

It to me is simple....he has a plan.
1)He writes the song
2)Cashes in on it
3)Makes a Video in which he parallels suicide with the aggrieved loss of something he never had.....
4)Sings it beautifully....conquering the top 10
5)In the video he continues to lip sink his sing as he disrobes, and shows his tiny bit of value....all in his pockets....
6)Pays 'Homage' to an alleged "ANGEL" he saw on a subway when he was '******* high' ~swearing that they had a moment, but she is with another man......
7)Jumps into the water, to simulate the washing off of the experience or the dying nature of unrequited love....
8)Collects Massive royalties for the song being a hit
9)Can't say that I cannot give the kid credit...for you see...he DID have a plan.....
10)He is now a Singing Sensation w/ a subterranean following of which I am one.

For me it's just a catchy pop-type song that really has no meaning, i mean the guy says he was f.u.c.k.ing high so really, what can the 'deeper' meaning be? It became famous because of the cathcy-ness (if that's even a word) and in about a year we'll never hear another word from this guy. I might sound like I don't like the song, I do, but it's just useless to go searching for the 'real' meaning of some songs, it's just a bunch of wishy-washy things that rhyme.

I think his plan has nothing to do with she that smiles whilst still with another man. Judging by the video, this boy wants out and will not be deterred by the smile of she that is in places crowded.Hence...I won't lose any sleep on that cause I've got a plan, means, concordantly that he is going to kill himself ergo he'll never be with her.

Note the poet says ""She was with another man."" so that is the reason in the next stanza he says''I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you."
Means he is not sure that he will be able to
acquire this beautiful girl who is with another man!!

Yeah, you're right. It's self contradictory. But the real thing, he wrote this song for his ex-girlfriend when he saw her in the subway.

LOL - good point! I have never paid so much attention on these lyrics, but you are right. The song does not make much sense. But still nice to listen to.

Hey, it's modern popular music for young people... what do you expect... Einstein's theory of relativity?
Oh, for the old days of my youth, when song lyrics made sense... like those of "Good Morning Starshine"!
Gliddy glup gloopy
Nibby nabby noopy la la la lo lo
Sabba Sibby sabba
Nooby abba nabba le le lo lo
Tooby ooby walla nooby abba nabba...

Ah, well you see, there's a story behind that song, a real one. He saw his ex-girlfriend on the tube, and I think he was going to say hello, but then he noticed her boyfriend was with her, so he couldn't do anything. Do you see now? Clear as mud!

I don't think they are self contradictory. I think that he is a man confused with what to do, or knowing that his plan won't work, and realizes that it will never happen.
