If you know this song, give me the story of it, and who sang it, and 10 pts is yours!

"That's the night that the lights went out in Georgia...that's the night that they hung an innocent man... (Small snipet from the song, and I'll give you a hint, it's probably alot older than many people on here).

Vickie Lawrence sang the song first in 1973; it was written by Bobby Russell. It's the story of a guy who is told by his friend that his wife cheated with the friend and another guy. The guy gets a gun to kill his friend, but when he gets there the friend is already dead. The guy signals the police and they hang him for the crime, which was really committed by his sister.

Druid hit the nail on the head. Perfect answer with one detail to be added... little sister also killed "his cheap* wife...that's one body that'll never be found."

Just a note about the singer... Vicki Lawrence won a Carol Burnett look-alike contest and appeared on her show as Mama (in a series of sketches about The Family), from which the Mama's Family sit-com spun off.

*I always heard "cheap," but the lyrics sites say "cheatin'."

The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" was composed by Bobby Russell, 1973

Set in a small southern town, this song describes one man's horror as he discovers his wife has been having sex repeatedly with many of his "friends." Deciding that murder is the best solution, he sets out gun in hand to kill his enemies, only to find that somebody has already done the job for him. Falsely charged in a "make believe trial," he is hanged by an angry mob of hillbillies as the vocalist glibly boasts to the audience of her serial killings.

Reba McIntyre someone got framed for a crime they didn't commit and was killed, so the lights went out at 12 midnight when most executions are scheduled.
