I like them both, for different reasons:
They both have very cohesive worlds to which the authors remain true. They both tell the story of good vs. evil in a dramatic and highly imaginary way.
Harry Potter is fun, easy to read, and tells a great story.
Lord of the Rings is harder to read, but the world and characters have more depth.

Harry Potter=90% LOTR=10%. Harry Potter is hot, funny, active, hot, pathetic at dating and that is totally adorable.
