I keep saying there is no risk, but somehow, all the ones I pulled out without safely remove keep damaging.

Really, as long as the device is not in the middle of writing data it should be fine to just remove it... however, sometimes a computer just decides that it is going to randomly write something to the drive and at that point...bang...damage...
The "remove hardware" feature is designed to finalize/un-mount and power down the device so that there is no risk when you pull it out. I would recommend this unless you are totally sure that there is no activity in the drive.

The "safely remove hardware" step is there as the computer's way of telling you that it is done accessing the memory stick. (this way you won't pull it out mid-way through copying pictures off of it)
Generally, I skip the step as I have a tendency to check the files copied off before removing it to begin with. If you don't want to take the extra time to check, then you might want to use that step as a precaution.
The chances of shocking your memory stick are very very low.
(It has a plastic outside to prevent static shock)

if you let it finish writing to the memory stick there are no problems with removing it i do it all the time but if it is still writing to the card when you put it out it can cause memory loss so make sure it is done writing before you pull it out

It doesn't matter. The life span of those things are quite long. pulling it out like that shortens it by so little. By the time they break, you will have a brand new camera using different memory

There should be no risk of damage except from static electricity- make sure you ground yourself to bleed off static before handling the stick.
