Trying to figure out some Cape Verdean issues and wanting to speak to someone from the country. Contact me if you want. My dad is 1/2 Cape Verdean and my mom is black. My dad's family did not accept her and I'm not sure why. Is there alot of racism in Cape Verde?

I am cape-verdean. I don't think there is real racism in Cape Verde. There are, in fact, some people that don't see themselves like Africans nor Europeans. they say they are "Atlantic" or Macaronesian (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macaronesia ).

Many people also don't see immigrants from the coast of Africa (like guinea-Bissau and Senegal), with good eyes. These immigrants are often called Manjaco, which is the name of a tribe in guinea-Bissau. Although that name is somewhat pejorative, it is not used in a racist way.

There is also the "europhilic" behavior, as i call it, which consists on cape-verdeans treating white people (tourists, in most cases) better than even national citizens. That happens a lot in airports and hotels, for example. But that is only people trying to make good figure at strangers, nothing special, I guess.

Despite all this, there are always people that are really racist, as in most societies. But those are closed-minded people and that behavior tends to disappear with time.
