"Directly proportional" means that as x gets bigger, M gets bigger too. The opposite of directly proportional is inversely proportional, in which the dependent variable gets smaller as the independent variable gets larger.
The general form of a direct proportion is
M = kx, where k is some constant.
If we were to double x in this situation, M would double, too.
The general form of inverse proportion is
M = k/x
Here, if we double x, M would go to half its previous value.

Notice if m grows, x grows. If x grows, m grows.
if you had to write it un-directly proportional.
it would be M=1/x or 1/m=x.
Notice in this case if m grows, x gets lower, and vice versa.
