No, and it should be answered....although perhaps it was to start up the company that makes those lotions and peach face scrub. They probably make a pretty good profit. If the creator of the company didn't run into the man with the 7 wives, it might be blueberry scrub instead of peach....

Yes, I remember it.
But what does it matter why you are going to St Ives? The idea of the riddle is to make you focus on all those kits, cats, sacks and wives.

firstly: this poem is not a limerick. the limerick is a strictform. two lines of amphibrach trimeter, two lines of amphibrach plus iamb, a line of amphibrach trimeter to close, rimed aa bb a - usually with feminine a rimes.

the st. ives poem has nothing in common with a limerick.

the st. ives poem is a riddle poem, and the answer to the riddle is 'one'.

one person is going to st. ives - the speaker. the man, his wives, their cats and kits are all coming from st. ives (this is how the speaker meets them).

so the answer to your question: 'why was i going to st. ives?' is: 'because otherwise the joke would not work.'

st. ives is an important market town in cornwall.
