the boards are obviously broken. the carpet is the only thing keeping me from crashing through the floor. the issue will be resolved in one week. problem is that in the meanwhile i'm hosting a party which will involve lots of passing over and on those broken floorboards. what can i do for my special day to keep my guests from taking a tumble? can i put a large sheet of plywood and cover it with a rug or will the added weight further damage the boards underneath?

Yes, you can put down a sheet of plywood to span the broken boards... Use at least a 5/8" to 3/4" plywood. The weight will be distributed across the 'good' boards. You might want to consider nailing or screwing the plywood down, to keep it from sliding, and make sure any rugs you put over it are secured. (Doublesided carpet tape, if nothing else)

Why don't you hold your party outside?
