Get a humidity gauge and see how much humidity is in your home. That could tell you if the smell is coming from excess moisture in the house.

If you have mold in the walls, that could be a big problem. Get a professional to check it out. Or do some research on how to tell if you have mold inside your walls.

Do you have a dog? Sometimes we get a musty smell in the house. I shampoo the carpets and the musty smell goes away. Basically, dog dander and other smells from our dog stay on the carpet and build up.

Do you have a house with a crawlspace underneath it? The crawlspace can keep extra moisture and give the house a musty smell. Have it checked out.

Do you have ceiling fans or another type of fan circulating the air in your home? Air that doesn't get moved around gets a stale, musty smell. If you don't have any fans, you can get a small fan that sits on a table that moves back and forth to help keep the humidity from building up in the air.

Has your home been repainted in the last 10 years? Sometimes paint on the walls can keep odors that float through the house. Try repainting if shampooing the carpets doesn't help.

I would try cleaning the carpets and floors first. Sometimes odors stay in the house because they soak into furniture or carpeting. Using febreeze only masks or covers the smell, it doesn't get rid of whatever is causing it.

Open all the windows in you can, in several rooms to get the air circulating.
You could try buying a whole bunch of scented tea-light candles (you can get packages of 25 or 50 for relatively cheap) and let them burn for 30 minutes or so at a time then blow them all out, then keep doing the same several times a day for a could days. I find that both the scent and the smoke when you blow them out seems to get rid of odors. But DO NOT leave unattended if you have kids or pets, then you'll have a much worse problem on your hand.

maybe you could try (just a guess, haven't ever tried this) getting several boxes of baking soda and pouring into several piepans?? I assume since a box in the fridge cuts down on odor that if you get a bunch and put in a room it might help too?

One more thing: Which room is it? If it's a bedroom where you could easily remove the sheets and bedspread and throw them in the dryer do that, same with curtains if you can launder them. Nothing beats the smell of clean sheets. Also, make sure a damp towel or clothes wadded up in the dirty clothes for a week isn't the culprit (I'm guilty of this). Additionally, if there are any rugs in the room you could throw them in the dryer or let them air outside in the sun for a few hours.

You may have to shampoo the carpet, try setting charcoal out in the corners of the room, charcoal absorbs odors and moisture, make sure you have good ventalation in the house, you may need to purchase a dehumidifier to help remove excess moisture, the smallest of leaks can cause a musty odor, check for leaks under sinks in kitchen and bath. Try using Carpet Fresh foam spray on the carpet after shampooing but the kind for pet odors as it will last a little longer on the carpets. You can also try a product called OUT it is made for pet odors as well, but will cut smoke and musty smells, works with an enzyme to kill odors, buy it in the pet center at Walmart, check for any signs of molds in the house if there is mold there is moisture, clean with pure bleach in a spray bottle. Good Luck

Sounds like there is moisture causing the problems. Get a dehumidifier and try using Arm & Hammer baking baking soda on the carpet. You may also want to have your roof checked to make sure that it isn't leaking anywhere or that mold isn't growing in your attic or walls.
