It's not really off the wall, but I had that problem with some children I used to sit for. All they wanted to do is watch television all day. This is how I handled it.
Get some index cards (or small pieces of paper) and each of you write a fun activity you would like to do. Write as many as you want but try to keep equal amounts for each person. Put them in a bowl. Take turns on who gets to pull a card and everyone does that activity.
Some examples...
Cook a meal together
Play a game
Go to an open area and watch the sunset
Have a picnic
Go for a walk together

Just try to beat him at his own game,instead of making his meals or cleaning up after him set down on the couch and start watching the tube ,when he starts complaining tell him you will get to it as soon as this show is over, after awhile he will figure out how annoying it is to be ignored over a t.v. program,and unless he is lazy and useless he will get the hint after a few days of this treatment.
