If I understand the question, I think the best singular word to let someone know you understand them,,, is, UNDERSTOOD!
I f I have misunderstood, and you would like to use one word to make sure your point was delivered clearly.. You might say... would say... UNDERSTOOD? Some Italians are famous for using the ...CAPISH?? Which translates to, UNDERSTOOD???

If you understand based on personal or shared experience (you "know what it's like") the term is empathy (empathize).

If you understanding without personal or shared experience (you can "imagine what it's like") the term is sympathy (sympathize)

If you "understand" because you are completely opposed to that point of view, then the term is antipathy.
