Viruses enter your body from other bodily fluids, whether it be blood or saliva, excrement or vomit. Viruses generally travel easier in the medium they affect, AIDS is blood-borne, and while it's possible a blood to blood transfer would infect you with a common cold or flu, it's generally spread by saliva. Generally viruses cannot survive for long outside of a host organism.

Your body is under attack by viruses constantly, many times you will receive a virus and not even know because your body is able to fight it off before it can affect you. Besides the obvious, visible or physical symptoms of an infection, a doctor can test for anti-bodies to see if you've been infected. The main reason we give vaccinations is so your body can fight off a weakened or dead virus and learn to make the anti-bodies to defeat it for the next time you are infected by it. However some viruses can remain dormant for long periods of time and even tests cannot show their presence, since the viral load (amount of virus particles) is so low.

On a side note, contrary to what was said above virus are NOT organisms. By the definitions of life it is not alive, technically it is an obligate intracellular parasite. This is for a few reasons, but the big ones are that they are not cellular based and they cannot reproduce (by themselves). They do share characteristics with living things, such as the use of DNA/RNA and the ability to evolve.

YES you can, and may have already become infected with HIV. What are you doing and are you nuts? Why on earth would you let someone use your body in such a way to dump their filth? The least he (and you) could have done was use a condom. You should do some research and see how long the AIDS virus can live outside the body. It's not days but weeks. I noticed that you used the words "HIV status" as though it eliminated the possibility that you've just gotten yourself exposed to AIDS. What you've done is like hiding a rattlesnake under your coat. Sooner or later it's going to bite you.

I would be inclined to agree with the guy above me, but for a couple of points. Firstly you cannot describe viruses as obligate intracellular parasites because there are some obligate intracellular bacteria, most notably Chlamydia pneumonia, which is the second biggest cause of community aquired pneumonia and can also cause menigitis.

The reason most virologists say that viruses are not alive is that they have no metabolic pathways of their own. The small pox virus has all the material it needs to replicate its genome inside its capsule.

Apart from that, he is right. Another way doctors can tell is by looking at your white blood cell count, specifically looking at the number of Tc cells, which are responsible for destroying cells in your body that have been infected with viruses.
