I would go with uppercase and lowercase just because they are both compound words. Caps is an abbreviation for capitals and if you use "small letters" you might as well use "big letters".

I totally agree that regardless of the way you call it, as long as you get your point across. If the students understand you, they know where and when to use uppercase/lower case is what really matters.

There is nothing wrong with using caps and small letters. Caps is imply an abbreviation for 'Capitals'. These are actually the more acceptable when teaching English.

Uppercase and Lowercase originally came into use when typewriters became popular, and referred to the positioning of the capitals and small letters on the keys.

The terminology has stayed with us and its use is also acceptable.

Uppercase and lowercase would be the most technical term.

I've given upon any idea of what's appropriate since these days anything seems to be allowed. As long as it makes sense, who cares (anymore)The terms upper and lowercase are more correct if you are speaking to someone who knows what they are.

It does not really matter how you express it.What does matter is that you put the big letters and small letters in the correct places.
