Your washing machine should say on the lid how to wash what types of colors and even gives guidance for stains.

Typically it's colors in cold so they don't fade and warm for everything else except whites which are definitely cleanest with hot. Don't put in too much soap, follow instructions and use bleach or bleach alternatives.

I thought the same thing. Cold is best though. Imagine if you got blood on your white shirt. Hot water expands the color and makes the stain worse (like tie dy). Cold water freezes the molecules together so they come off the shirt better.

I think hot water is too harsh on fabrics, although some people tend to disagree.

Also, try using peroxide instead of bleach, which at times leaves clothes a yellowish tone, which gets worse with time.

Hot water is better to get your clothes clean, but it tends to fade colors faster. So you have a balance. Generally, it is a good idea to wash colors in cold, and whites in hot (since white doesn't fade.)

save on electricity and use cold water. does the same job as hot.
add baking soda or vinegar to your wash. whites will be whiter.
add bleach only for some whites. rinse your machine after bleach use.

Bleach will work in either, but I agree with you: Hot is still the best (although not the most efficient).
