It depends. Usually when I write source codes from programming, I usually can type 110 characters/letters per minute. But for writing letters or essays, I can write 22-30 words per minute.

Hi JDW. When you are trained as a typist, you have to get a minimum speed of 35 w.p.m. to pass the examination. I would say an average typing speed is about 45. People advertising for secretaries etc. expect them to have a speed of between 50 and 80 w.p.m. The last time I timed myself, I was typing at 120 w.p.m.

Typing speed always depends on the text. I can type "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." at 80 wpm, but I normally do 40-60 wpm on normal text. 20-25 wpm is better than many people, but I'd shoot for about 40 wpm if I were you. It makes things go a whole lot quicker. I have seen people who claim to type 100 wpm, but that is rare. I think the standard for secretaries is about 60 wpm.

Anyone who spends a moderate time on the computer should be able to do 70-80 per minute. Anything over 100 is really fast. And if you are typing 30-40 per minute, you're retarded.
