Some scholars say that the mystery of the "virgin" birth is due to mistranslation. Translation is rarely exact and a similar word can change the sentiment of the sentence drastically. In this case, the word that was translated as "virgin" would be more accurately defined as "young woman", or "maiden," not necessarily someone who has not had intercourse, though moral Jews of that time would assume or at least hope that a young woman would not have intercourse until marriage, and even then only in the accepted manner and at the accepted time, for there were traditions involving when the best time of was year to bear a child.

It may also be noted that the virign birth is not unique to Christianity. For example, the cult of Mithras, a religion popular with Roman soldiers of the time when the Gospels were being recorded, featured at its center the figure Mithras, a god savior said by some to be born of a virgin, and whose birthday was celebrated on December 25th, the same as Jesus.

While the Christian Bible may be very similar to other belief systems, it may be incorrect to say that is a terrible amalgamation and the all its traditions are stolen and untrue. Similarities in religion may be seen as a shared humanity, with an acceptance of a difference in interpretation for different people, location and times. How many times have you ever had an idea and found out that it had already been done? Did you steal that idea, or was it stolen from you? Neither. Similar or even identical ideas happen all throughout the world every day, but the ones that get credit are the people who act first, or are more successful or popular.

The virigin birth even occurs in North American Native traditions, and it was this striking similarity to aspects of Catholicism that made Joseph Campbell, a well regarded historian of Comparative Mythology, to begin to see the interconnectedness of human thought, regardless of time or location.

That being said, I am a believer in Christ, but not a member of any denomination. I would suggest that you concentrate on the reason why a virgin birth would be important. What does it mean to you? What might it have meant to the people alive at the time? Also, examine the Virgin Mary as a possible Maternal Image of God, both mother to God, and God herself.

Or if you prefer to stick to more accepted meditations, contemplate the Virgin Mary as being your personal Mother, ready to chastise you when needed, but eternally full of compassion. Abiding by the will of God that Father, and Jesus, but looking out for her children and doing her best to take care of us and seeing that God act not too harshly upon us, as long as we fulfill our obligations to him-and ourselves.

To respond to those who answered that it was an immaculate conception - this is not correct. The immaculate conception was the birth of Mary as she was born without sin. Jesus was conceived as a mircle from God, leaving Mary a virgin (without sin).

Christianty converted Roman pagans. They 1st believers, mostly Jews, didn't believe she was a virgin, she was Josephs wife and the baby was theirs. The 1st Christians believed the baby was the Mashiach promised to save the Jewish people and the world. Later, in order to get Roman pagens to believe they made the birth divine by saying she was a virgin.

Mary was impregnated by immaculate conception. When the Father is divine, it doesn't matter if you're a virgin.
