That's illegal in about 49 states. if you live in the south, then almost certainly. If it freezes up in the winter, maybe not.

However, even the remote chance that someone, or some thing might get hurt from it makes this a bad idea. Piranhas are already illegal in some states because people have done this in the past.

Do you love your piranha? Then don't do anything that could make it illegal for other people to own them!

If your piranha is legal in your state, try to sell it back to the pet store, or a friend. If that doesn't work, it may be for the best if you send your piranha to a painless death :(

There seem to be two basic thoughts on how to painlessly kill of a fish:

1:Net it, and whack it against something hard.
2: Put it in a plastic container, and leave it in the freezer until solid.

When I unfortunately had to move without much notice, I had to try both. I found that I could not actually hit a fish on the counter with much accuracy, and I lacked the resolve to hit hard enough to actually kill the fish anyway. For this reason, I reccomend method #2. once the ice has hardened, you can dump the block in the toilet, and flush after it melts.

Cruel, so try your friends and the pet shops first. The privately owned pet shops, epsecially, tend to be rather understanding of your situation, and will often give you some cash, or at least a store credit.

River fish like piranhas can live in some pretty filthy water, so chances are, in a temperate climate, the fish may survive for some time. The practice of dumping exotic fish into local river systems is highly discouraged because of the damage they could cause to the established ecosystems.

Piranhas are schooling fish and if the conditions happen to be right, will breed. However, the chances of the offspring thriving until adulthood would be unlikely. The danger you speak of would consist of the piranhas devouring the food supply of existing organisms and upsetting the natural balance.

Long explanation short: don't even think about doing this.

That is very dangerous to do, especially if you live somewhere warm like in the southern United States. You could ruin the whole ecosystem of an entire river system. If the water is warm enough they could possibly breed and create a humongous problem costing millions and millions of dollars to even attempt to fix.

I would also think that it could be highly illegal. People have done that with pythons and boa contrictors down in the Florida everglades and now they are starting to breed and on top of that they have no predators. It's going to become a huge problem in the future.

Think before ever considering something like that.

Since they are pets, they might rely on you for the food. So if you released them into the river, they might starve because they depend on you giving them the food or they might develope a nature and eat on their own but yes they would become dangerous. This would also prove your a bad pet owner to throw them in the river instead of taking care of them yourself.

First you should NEVER do this!

As to your question, it depends on where you live. In warmer waters the answer is yes, however there are very few places in the U.S. where they would thrive & breed. Odds are they would just die.

YOU IDIOT!
If you are going to do that make sure you're in the river first.
