Personal appearance is a part of making a good first impression. If you care about making a good impression.
If personality is both a person's behavior and how others respond to that behavior as well as the physical appearance of the person, then appearance and behavior are important.
Appearance and personality can change for better or worse, I used to look a lot better but I care a lot less about what others think about my personal appearance. That happens when you get old.

I would say that one's appearance shapes personality far more than 5%. I would call it close to 20%. Maybe higher. Remember that personality undergoes some severe changes during adolesence, and what is more important to a teenager than appearance? Much of it is the looking-glass-effect. We see ourselves as others see us, and that is the basis on which we judge ourselves. Another is comparison of our own appearance to that of others in our peer group. And even though our ideals change as we age, and some of us even manage to set appearance on the back burner, it remains on our minds, even if it isn't always apparent. Not only the way our body looks, or our complexion but our clothing, and even the way we carry ourselves...these last two are biggies when it comes time to seek employment and begin careers...actually, i would say that appearance is 100% significant to the way our personality develops. It is by far not the ONLY factor, but i believe that it will influence personality 100% of the time (but let's call it 99% so we leave room for error)

you can"t look at that effecting everyone in the same way. you have the personalities that ignore physical appearance for other points of interest and at no point let "looks" interfere with subconscious decisions. while other can do nothing but use "looks" to gage life and happiness. if you put everybody together in a group then none of the personality is shape by "looks" but by the environment around the person

I bet this question is hard to study in general population because it would be hard to test how someones personality would be if their looks were different.
However I'm sure in cases of disfigurement, like 3rd degree burns over ones body it would make a significant change in that persons personality. Conversely it would be possible to gauge a personality change in a woman who's had plastic surgery, like a face lift and breast lift.
I bet a real interesting case would be that woman in France whose face was mauled off by her dog and had a face transplant to repair it. From what I've read she feels much better about herself now that her face is repaired, compared to being a shut-in when she was disfigured.

Hmmm.... Well, I think that good-looking people are often more confident and that sometimes they're treated much better than more unattractive people. That would definitely influence positive/ negative personality.
That being said, I try very hard not to judge by appearance alone.

I think personality shows through. people might not be aware they are good looking, and always be self concious as what they see as being their imperfections. what people respond to is the personality, the mannerism and the body language of that person, which in my opinion is 80% of what we are seen from.
the other 30% is the looks, and 10% the words we say and how we say them.

Well i dont think looks are as important as personality-- you can look at someone and get the wrong idea- they may look a million dollars but they probably have no conversation to offer, whereas someobody else who looks not so glam may have a lovely personality
