Remove the valve covers, you should be able to see them all. Compare them against each other. They should all look the same. If you see cracks, flat spots, or dark blue color, you have problems.

Try this site and see if they cover your car, they have pictures.

Remove the rocker cover and measure the movement of the spring retainers.. all intake valves should move the exact same distance and the same with the exhausts.
You will probably have to remove the sparkplugs to relieve compression so you can turn the engine by moving the accessory pully -- there are a lot of different set ups so you should try and find an experienced person to help you

there is no way to check out cam without removing it from motor because those other examples everyone gave you are incorrect you may have a collapsed lifter instead of bad cam cams dont usually wear out like that they do however flake off you would notice a sharp tapping sound in motor to test this get a long screwdriver with the metal extending through the handle place one end on intake with motor running and put other end to your ear and listen for sharp clicking or pinging sound ... if you remove valve cover and try to measure rocker arm travel take into account that you may have bent push rod ,collapsed lifter.. but in the event you have a lifter problem since you have to remove cam to replace them because the mushroom out on bottom from cam striking them replace the cam as well and problem solved.

The very open indication of a bad cam is the noise from the engine. it sounds like flickering and noisy even in idle.

another step to find the extent "worn out" is by Removing the rocker cover and measure the gap b/w all the spring retainers.
the timing of contact will be more...

Take the top off the air cleaner and rev it up a bit, you will probably hear it spitting back through the intake indicating a bad cam. This is not foolproof by any means, but if were talking small block Chevy and you hear it spitting with the top of the air cleaner off you are nearly guaranteed it's a bad cam.
