It is pretty common in the US. Nobody is sure just why it happens, but it is less likely if you breastfeed and if you have help with housework and care of older children so that you can care for your baby. It still can happen, and it is more likely with women who have a history of depression. It is much less common in non-Western societies, possibly because they have a better support system for new mothers.

A lot of women get the Baby Blues after giving birth. It's just hormone levels playing evil tricks. Some women get Post Partum Depression. It's horrible. Very bad. And some get Post Partum Psychosis which is just flat out flip your lid CRAZY.
Baby Blues should go away fairly soon when things get back to normal. If not, then it's probably Post Partum Depression.

After you have a baby your hormones are out of wack. Estrogen and Testosterone levels go up and down. This causes your emotions to fluctuate like a person with bipolar. After awhile your body calms down and gets to the prepregnancy hormone level. When you have a child your body goes through a tremendous amount of stress. A lot has to do with the separation of the baby from the mothers body. There is an emptiness and it is hard.

Change in hormone levels. If the depression is really bad they should consult professional help.
If anyone finds themselves depressed for more than 1-2 hours at a time, this is a clear symptom of a dipression disorder.

Yes, it is caused from the hormone drop in her body. I think it is natures way of keeping the woman away from the man so she doesn't get pregnant too soon again. lol, A woman goes through a lot and a man needs to help her and by all means, never disagree with whatever she says.

There is a lotof controversy regarding treatments.
If you or someone you know is experiencing this, please tell you healthcare professional. This is a real medical crisis. Don't tough it out.

It in not rare but scientists are not sure whether it is common or not. It would best to say that is is not uncommon. The depression probably is caused by an inbalance of chemical in your brain that alter the way you think.

their hormones are out of whack after a baby is born...the body takes time for them to go back to what they are when not pregnant..some people's are very slow at it too...plus the trauma on the body from having a baby is very intense, stressful and takes a lot of energy away from the Mom.A newborn needs alot of attention,so sleep is poor quality and rough on the body's healing process....watch a baby being born & note all the Mom's body suffers....it's amazing how much it does to them
